Blocking Spammers
« on: December 17, 2015, 11:15:09 AM »
So, the new manually accepted registrations have been successful at keeping spammers out at the very least. But I'm somewhat unhappy with the extra step required for people to get in and start roleplaying. I'd much prefer people be able to just start as soon as they create their account.

To that end I'm actually looking into a suggestion that a friend of mine made that will hopefully keep bots out without impacting registration for real users at all. Unfortunately, if it doesn't work, we may see a few more spammers around here when it's implemented, so I just figured I'd give you guys a heads up.

Yeah, and see if the new system works. What should happen is something that will block bots, but be invisible to users, and not slow down their registration at all. But there's a chance it won't work the way I'm hoping and I will have to revert to the old system.

It's pretty obvious from their applications. The bots usually fill out their application with stuff like

Character Name: Charlton
Charater Bio: Shaman

and have an email addres like bz.a.a.gg.rgeq.as@mailbiz.com

But right now the best I have is going through applications by hand and manually rejecting ones that look like that.

oh, SMAPPPERS.  I misread! Those are easy, just leave out a plate of koocies and they get distracted by those and then leave.
